Sylwia Nowakowska

Data Artist | Physicist

Living on the Swiss Gold Coast, my work is driven by a profound appreciation for the beauty of Lake Zurich and its calming, rhythmic waves. From this appreciation, the Gold Coast Collection was born; through it, I discovered a new way to experience the place I call home, and I would like to share this perspective with others.

For me as a Data Artist, the environment itself provides the raw data. I use nadir drone photography to document the geometry of the coast, and pristine on-site acoustic recordings to capture the ambient sounds of the waves, birds, clanking boat masts, and church bells. The final artworks synthesize this real-world data through deliberate artistic choices and custom code. Their main architectural lines and color palettes are derived directly from the drone photographs, which are mathematically blended with data extracted from the soundscapes.

To reveal the intuitive connection between the acoustic recordings and the resulting artworks, each piece comes with a digital animation that allows viewers to immerse themselves in the art as it is unfolding. This programmed motion creates a flowing effect reminiscent of wet paint, serving as an homage to the traditional painting process.

Ultimately, my work seeks to bridge the gap between raw data and emotions. By transforming ambient environmental data into immersive art, data is no longer just analyzed—it is experienced. This practice exists at the exact intersection of my passions: blending the aesthetic intuition of a photographer with the rigorous precision of a scientist.

Having worked as a Researcher in academia and high-tech start-ups as well as a Machine Learning Engineer for the University Hospital Zürich and Google, I founded Data Immersion to reveal the beauty hidden within the data of our daily lives.
